Abbey & Museum of Art and Archaeology
The Benedictine abbey of Cluny was founded in 910.
Throughout the Middle Ages it influenced Western Europe and as mother house ruled over more than a thousand monasteries. The church of “Cluny III” was finished during the 12 th century and for a long time was the largest church in Christendom. |
|
Today, we can admire the magnificent elevation of the transept of this huge abbey church, the cloisters and the 18 th century monastery buildings.
|
| The Museum of Art & Archaeology, admission to which is free with the ticket to the abbey, contains a number of remarkable mediaeval sculptures from the abbey church and monastery village.
The tour ends with the “Flour store” where you will discover a series of capitals, evidence of the splendour of Cluny.
