The National Stud

The National Stud Farm is the administrative seat of the Regional Service of Stud Farms in Burgundy. Its activities vary from breeding to marketing, and the use of a variety of breeds.

In 1806, Napoleon the First, who needed numerous horses for his military campaigns, founded 30 Stud Farms, including the one in Cluny, in 1806. The first horses were kept in Saint Hugh's Stables, and since 1811 have they been stabled in the current buildings.

The tour allows visitors to discover the 19th century stables. The stallions (thoroughbreds, ponies and draft horses) are at the Stud Farm from mid-July to early March. Outside this period, most are divided out among other farms for breeding.

The population of the Stud Farm is largely made up of thoroughbred stallions. They are used for breeding racing stock liable to make a name for themselves on the race courses. Arab and French Saddle stallions are intended to breed horses for sport and leisure activities.

Draft horse breeds include Percherons, Comtois and Auxois. The stud Farm also includes one of the four national stallion sperm freezing centres.

Between April and October some fifty events are held: breeding competition, horse gathering; the most famous event being the National Show Jumping Competition held on Ascension Day.
